THE JAPANESE KIMONO
Abstract
The word Kimono translates in English to “thing to wear”, but that does not begin to describe the impact this garment has had on Japanese culture, folk art, stories, traditions, and rituals. A kimono can conjure vivid imagery of decorated Geishas, stoic tea ceremonies or fun-filled festivals and for others it is a source of cultural identity and family traditions. This article of clothing has stood the test of time from its introduction over a thousand years ago to modern day and while it might not be as widely seen as it used to be, it is still highly respected.
